UAE allows residents abroad with expired visas to return without new permit
Special measure introduced after regional airspace disruptions delayed travel
DUBAI – Residents stranded outside the UAE after their residency permits expired have been granted a temporary opportunity to return to the country without applying for a new entry permit.
The move was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), which said the decision was taken after prevailing circumstances in the region disrupted travel and prevented many residents from returning before their visas expired.
Airspace closures and the suspension of flights across parts of the region left travellers unable to reach the UAE, prompting authorities to introduce a special measure to facilitate their return.
The policy came into effect on February 28, 2026 and will remain valid until March 31, 2026.
Who qualifies
The decision applies to residents who were outside the UAE and whose residency permits expired on or after February 28, 2026 while they were abroad.
Under the temporary measure, these residents will be permitted to enter the UAE without applying for a new entry visa during the validity period of the initiative.
Authorities said the step allows affected residents to return and regularise their legal residency status without facing financial penalties that may have resulted from their permits expiring while they were unable to travel.
The ICP noted that the decision addresses exceptional circumstances beyond residents’ control, particularly those linked to regional airspace closures and broader disruptions to international air travel.
Humanitarian step
Officials said the move reflects the UAE’s humanitarian approach to dealing with emergencies that affect residents and travellers.
By removing the requirement for a new entry permit, authorities aim to ease the burden on residents stranded abroad and allow them to resume their lives in the country.
The authority said the initiative will also support residents in continuing to work, live and contribute to the UAE’s ongoing development during a period of disrupted global travel.
Family reunions
Authorities highlighted that the decision also aligns with the values of the “Year of the Family” initiative, emphasising the importance of keeping families together.
The measure provides an opportunity for the head of a household or any family member whose residency expired while they were outside the UAE to return and reunite with their families.
The ICP added that it continues to implement emergency response and business continuity plans across operational locations and airports in the UAE to ensure procedures remain smooth.
These measures include addressing cases involving postponed or rescheduled flights and providing necessary support to residents affected by the travel disruptions.
Officials have urged residents to follow official communication channels for updates and any regulatory measures related to the situation, while reaffirming the authority’s commitment to maintaining readiness and ensuring uninterrupted services for travellers and residents during exceptional circumstances.
